Caliber: 45 ACP

Capacity: 9 (8 in magazine + 1 in chamber)
Price: $485

This 45 ACP is the Taurus PT945. It combines the best features from the famous Beretta 92 in their PT-92 series and the legendary M1911.
PROFILE: As a “Commander Sized” pistol, it is almost identical in silhouette the famous commander style 1911 and also similar in tactile feel and operation. Controls are in similar places but improved with the addition of a decocker integrated with the safety.
FACTORY PORTED: Barrel and matching slide are factory ported to reduce recoil and muzzle flip. What pleasure to shoot such a well behaved 45 ACP.
HANDLING, “1911 FEEL” and ERGONOMICS: It has natural pointing capabilities and feels similar to the M1911A1. And it sits relatively low and comfortably in the hand.
This 45 ACP also mimicks the feel of a M1911A1 in more ways. The grip-to-frame angle is nearly identical to the M1911A1. Both the front and back grip straps are serrated along their entire length for enhanced grip. It has a nicely round butt, which helps avoid the shirt/jacket “print” when carried concealed.
Well-beveled magazine to facilitate reloading, a feature usually seen only on more expensive 1911 models.
Factory grips have raised diamond patter for a solid feel.
SAFETY: The frame-mounted safety lever has three positions. “Up” is safe and the pistol can be carried “cocked and locked” in Condition One. The middle position is “fire.” Pressing the lever fully down acts as a decocker and safely drops the hammer. Also, the safety is ambidextrous. But this ambidextrous safety is improved and does not obstruct handling or protrude like others do.
LOADED CHAMBER INDICATOR: The extractor also serves as a visual and tactile loaded chamber indicator: With a round chambered, it protrudes slightly to reveal a red notch just slightly above the slide’s surface to be easily felt. This is an instant “loaded” indication.
CONTROLS: The slide release and magazine release are positioned in a similar location as the M1911A1.
TRIGGER & ACTION: Double-action and single-action fire control. The double-action mode is SMOOTH and uses about 9.5 to 10.5 pounds – not too heavy and just right for this sized gun.
The double/single action and safety allow a Condition One, “cocked and locked” carry that many find very convenient. It facilitates your 2nd follow up shot and it follows this kind of common carry for the M1911A1.
Single-action trigger pull is about 4.5 to 5.5 pounds, which many find ideal for a combat handgun. The single-action trigger also has a crisp, clean break and no discernable creep.
RELIABILITY & OPERATION: Excellent reliability “out-of-the-box” and reliably feed every type of ammunition, including semiwadcutter (unlike some factory M1911A1 pistols, which often hang up feeds). No need to get it “ramped and throated” which is very expensive.
Reasons for great reliability: the polished feed ramp that is machined into the barrel. When the barrel moves rearward and drops down after ejecting a case, the ramp moves into a notch in the frame. At the same time, the magazine positions the next cartridge high on the feed ramp, almost in a direct line with the chamber (definitely improvement over the M1911A1, in which the round first hits the feed ramp in the frame, and then bounces up into the chamber).
It uses the excellent “Browning Short Recoil System” with the barrel’s locking block engaging the ejection port. The very large ejection port extends halfway down the right side of the slide and wraps over the top left of the slide for great performance. The slide locks to the rear after the final shot and the magazines drop free when the release if pressed.

CONSTRUCTION: Steel slide of course. A modern slide/barrel interface requires no barrel bushing.
SIGHTS: Combat-type with a square-notch rear sight with the proved 3-WHITE-DOTS and blade front sight with a white dot.
TAKEDOWN: Easier than the 1911. Clear the pistol, remove the magazine, move the slide forward into battery. Then press the locking button on the slide and rotate the takedown lever. The slide will move forward on the frame and removed. Remove recoil spring guide rod and the barrel … and you are done!
The features, fit and finish of its more expensive cousins that it easily rivals. Note the absence of machine marks, a characteristic of higher end firearms.
Unbeatable Taurus warranty: covers damage and normal wear and tear with no questions asked. If it breaks for any reason — EVER – Taurus will repair or replace the gun free for the life of the gun no matter if you’re the original owner or not.
