John B. Derrick was raised in Europe and developed a love for the classic muzzle loading firearms found in museums there. He later learned to build those guns. Mr. Derrick passed on last year and his guns appeared on the market. This one is a German Jaeger and it is truly a functional work of art. The Jaeger rifle was brought to the American Colonies by German gunsmiths and evolved into the American Long Rifle. Typical of Derrick, the rifle has extensive rococo carving on the maple stock, cast inlays depicting hunting scenes, and inlays made from elk antler. The ramrod tip is antler and features engraving. Here are some additional facts:
Overall length - 46"
Length of Pull - 13"
Barrel Length - 31"
Caliber - 50 (uses .490 patched lead ball)
Sliding wooden patch box.
Flip up dual rear sights.
R.E. Davis flintlock
Double set triggers
And the big question. Can you shoot it? Well, I have and there's no reason you shouldn't. I found it to be very accurate. Just remember - BLACK POWDER ONLY! Smokeless will destroy the gun and black powder substitutes don't work well in a flintlock.
Why am I selling it? I'm a lefty and the thickness of the sliding patchbox makes it hard to get a good sight picture. I can't switch to my right shoulder because my right eye has macular cell degeneration.
I'm hearing impaired so talking on the phone isn't my strong point. Message me through the TGT system. I live on the south side of Canyon Lake and will meet you in the New Braunfels/Seguin/Bulverde/Buda area. I'll also consider shipping if you pay the expense. PRICE: $850 Firm.
