Smith & Wesson Victory Model - 5" Barrel - 6 Shot - Great WW II Collectible - CALIBER 38 S&W - $629
Comes with Glock night sights installed!
World War II started off a lot the same as World War I. The United States didn't have enough firearms. Neither did our Allies. The U.S. has officially adopted the M1911 A1 in 45ACP as the official sidearm but we didn't have enough of them at the beginning of the war and it was clear that we wouldn't be able to produce enough of them to meet demand. We needed handguns for combat troops, sailors, stateside troops, guards at warehouses and other facilities. The OSS needed to supply weapons to resistance fighters overseas and the industrial might of the United States needed to help our allies come up with much needed handguns as well.
Smith & Wesson was already making a Military & Police model revolver that was in wide use in police departments across the country. With the start of World War II, production was ramped up and a number of different variations were made for U.S. aircrews, the Lend-Lease program, security guards and even U.S. troops.
This particular revolver features a 5 inch barrel is chambered for the 38S&W cartridge, not the 38 Special. These versions were primarily made for the British under the Lend-Lease program and were designed for the 200 Grain 38S&W cartridge that was used in other British sidearms of the day. However, a good number of these 38/200 models were also provided to the OSS, who then provided them to resistance fighters overseas. While the 38 Special version was the model commonly issued for United States troops, some of these 38/200 models also saw use with troops in the U.S.
The serial number for ours is V 770896. That serial number is on the butt of the revolver, underneath the barrel and on the face of the cylinder. That indicates to us that the revolver is in its original configuration from time of issue.
There is a "P" proof mark on the left side of the frame, just forward of the hammer. A "P" proof mark is also present on the face of the cylinder. "Made in U.S.A." is on the right side of the frame, just forward of the trigger. The left side of the barrel is stamped "Smith & Wesson". The right side of the barrel is marked "38 S&W CTG". We do not see any British, Canadian or Australian proof marks. We do not find any "U.S. Property" stamps. Production of this model is very probably 1942 or earlier due to the checkered grips. Later models tended to have smooth wood grips.
The barrel of this revolver is bright and the rifling appears strong. The bore is clean and there is no rust. The grips are in Very Good condition with only very light wear on the checkering. We find no cracks or gouges. Most of the metal finish has been lost to age but we find no rust and the metal is in Very Good condition.
The cylinder release moves properly. The ejector rod moves freely and the spring tension is strong to return it to its normal position. The hammer functions properly and the lockup is tight. The trigger is normal in both single action and double action. The front sight is in Good condition and the muzzle has no dings.
Overall, this is a very nice example of a World War II collectible revolver. Unlike a lot of these, we see no signs of a rebuild or swapped out parts. If you're a collector of World War II era firearms and don't have a Victory revolver in your collection, take a good look at this one. If you're just a fan of vintage pistols or if this period of history is important to you, this revolver is worth a look as well.
Note: This handgun is chambered for 38S&W. It is not chambered for the .38 Special cartridge.
Purchase is for the revolver only. No case or box.
