USED - Browning "American Browning" A5 - 26" Barrel - Extra Barrel - World War II Vintage - Caliber 20 Gauge - $1,759
John Browning's A5 or Auto 5 model is probably one of the most popular, long lasting shotgun models ever produced. Since the first models were produced in 1903, there's been a tremendous amount of history behind this shotgun. We believe this to be one of the "American Browning" shotguns that were produced by Remington due to the barrel markings and the "C" prefix on the serial number. Remington produced these Brownings from 1940 - 1947 as Belgian production was stopped during World War II. We can't date it more specifically than that but our serial number of C8618 is probably in the early part of that time frame. The serial number on the 28” barrel and the receiver both match. The 26” barrel does have a different serial number.
The barrel that is presently on the shotgun is 26 inches long and the markings on the barrel indicate that it is an Improved Cylinder choke. It is chambered for 2-3/4", 20 Gauge shells. The left side of the barrel is a two line marking. The top line reads, Browning Arms Company St Louis MO The second line reads, **- Special Steel - 20 Gauge - Shells 2-3/4". The bore is very clean and the barrel is exceptionally bright and shiny.
The extra barrel is 28 inches long and has the same serial number as the receiver. The left side of the barrel has the same markings as the 26 inch barrel with the exception of being marked with a “ * “, which would indicate a Full choke on this barrel. This barrel is also clean, bright and shiny.
The wood is a checkered pistol grip stock with a black cap and a checkered forearm. The receiver is engraved on both sides and the engraving is clear and sharp. A manual safety is at the rear of the trigger guard and a bead front sight sits on top of the barrel. A Pachmayr ventilated recoil pad sits at the end of the buttstock.
The wood is absolutely beautiful with a red-ish hue. We find no cracks and no major defects. The wood would grade as Excellent and, candidly, is some of the best looking A5 wood that we’ve seen. The recoil pad is also in Excellent condition.
The metal finish on both barrels grades as Excellent. There are only the lightest signs of use or storage on them. The finish on the receiver also grades as Excellent, although there is a small scratch by the screw on the left, rear side of the receiver. Please review all of the photos to make sure that you agree with us on this.
We'll admit that we have a bit of a weakness for Browning A5 shotguns, but then a lot of folks do and for good reason. If you're a fan of classic A5 shotguns or just a fan of vintage shotguns in general, we don't think that you'll be disappointed in this one. Take a good look through the photos and we think you'll agree that this is probably one of the better looking older Brownings that you'll find. This is one of those heirloom models that can pass from generation to generation in your family.
Purchase includes the shotgun as shown, additional 28 inch barrel and a soft, suede zippered case.
